starlet Josko Gvardiol has flirted with the idea of playing for , despite his well-publicised switch to edging closer. The Croatian centre-back was one of the best players on the pitch as they held Belgium to a 0-0 draw on Thursday, booking their spot in the World Cup knockout stages.
Gvardiol was already on the road to becoming a household name before he kicked a ball in Qatar. Chelsea showed serious interest in the summer but RB Leipzig were in no mood to sell, even with Blues co-owner Todd Boehly splashing the cash.

Despite being in between windows, Chelsea’s transfer chiefs appear to have been hard at work as they edge towards a double deal with the Bundesliga outfit. Christopher Nkunku and Gvardiol could be on their way from RB Leipzig, with both deals .
Blues supporters were given a taste of what they could be in for on Thursday as Gvardiol put together a dominant performance, shutting out Belgium’s attacking heavyweights and showing off his competence with the ball at his feet.

Even so, the 20-year-old was outspoken on his admiration for Real Madrid when asked by this week, and he admitted that he ‘would like’ to play for them one day. “Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world, so who knows… maybe one day I can play there,” he admitted. “I would like to, yes.”
Gvardiol came through the ranks with Dinamo Zagreb before being snapped up by RB Leipzig as a teenager in 2020. Since the beginning of last season, he has become a regular starter in the Bundesliga and at international level, with former Premier League midfielder Jermaine Jenas particularly impressed.

While watching the match against Belgium, Jenas referred to Gvardiol as ‘different class’. The young defender could earn his living at the Bernabeu one day but he did shed some light on links to Chelsea and a possible link-up with international team-mate Mateo Kovacic.
“About me and Chelsea? I don’t know,” he told reporters. “You know what happened in the last few months. To be honest, I have no idea. My agent is taking care of this and we will see. Right now, I’m happy in Leipzig. I don’t know, we will see – you never know.

“You know the stories and these things, but all I can say is that I’m happy in Leipzig and right now I’m going to stay there and perform for them. It’s a big club of course and, who knows, maybe one day I will be there.
“It’s really nice to see things like this, especially because there is Kovacic, so you never know. I talk with him. Even to be here on this, the biggest event, it’s a big thing for me at 20 years old so I’m happy. I have to think about it.”
