Jadon Sancho ‘late to team meeting’ as Southgate’s frustrations with star come to light

star was reportedly late for an team meeting ahead of the Three Lions’ qualifying victory over Andorra last October. The 22-year-old winger, who has won 23 caps for his country, has been left out of ’s squad for this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

Sancho was a regular in the England squads during his time with Borussia Dortmund and appeared in three matches when Southgate’s side reached the final of Euro 2020 last summer. But he has only played for England once since missing his spot kick in the penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the final of that tournament.

That sole appearance came against Andorra as he played 73 minutes and bagged two assists during a 5-0 victory. But, according to , Sancho’s timekeeping was an issue for England’s backroom staff as he rolled up late for the meeting. Southgate has a policy of only starting meetings when every player is present – and that means the squad were left waiting around for the talented Red Devils ace.

Sancho previously fell short of England’s high expectations in March 2018 when he and Phil Foden were dropped for their country’s under-19s European Championship qualifier against Latvia after turning up for a training session late. And it appears Sancho hadn’t learnt his lesson by the time he was about to face Andorra with the main squad.

Sancho’s World Cup omission is said to be based purely on performances rather than his timekeeping. But Southgate would have likely been frustrated when the player failed to show up at the right time.

Sancho moved to Old Trafford for £73million last summer after bagging 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 games for Dortmund. But he has failed to live up to expectations in the Premier League.

Last season, the ex-Manchester City academy player only found the back of the net three times in 29 Premier League matches during an underwhelming campaign under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his interim successor Ralf Rangnick. And this season, he has scored just twice in 10 matches. He failed to make the starting XI in the Premier League against Everton and West Ham last month as United won both matches. And his England exclusion will be another huge blow for him.

Sancho will be well aware that he will need to improve over the second half of the campaign to force his way back into Southgate’s thoughts. But he will first want to show the Three Lions gaffer exactly what he is missing out on when United take on Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.
