That sole appearance came against Andorra as he played 73 minutes and bagged two assists during a 5-0 victory. Last season, the ex-Manchester City academy player only found the back of the net three times in 29 Premier League matches during an underwhelming campaign under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his interim successor Ralf Rangnick. And this season, he has scored just twice in 10 matches. He failed to make the starting XI in the Premier League against Everton and West Ham last month as United won both matches. And his England exclusion will be another huge blow for him.

Sancho will be well aware that he will need to improve over the second half of the campaign to force his way back into Southgate’s thoughts. But he will first want to show the Three Lions gaffer exactly what he is missing out on when United take on Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.
