Germany boss Flick takes teenage duo to World Cup as four Premier League stars make cut

Germany manager Hansi Flick has included two teenagers in his squad, although he sparked surprise by leaving out World Cup winner Mats Hummels. Four aces are also involved, including names from , , and .

Germany’s World Cup contingent is always one to watch out for, given they’ve won the tournament on four prior occasions. With the most recent triumph coming in 2014, some eyebrows were raised to see World Cup final match-winner Mario Gotze make the 26, considering his career has slid somewhat in recent years.

There was no place for Hummels, however, as Flick opted for a relatively youthful defence. The two teenagers involved are of the forward-thinking variety, with 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukouko the youngest member of the entire squad.

The Cameroonian-born youngster has scored six goals in just seven Bundesliga starts this term, with a trio of assists to boot. Bayern Munich’s 19-year-old maestro Jamal Musiala has also made the cut, and England fans will need no reminding of the fact that he opted against representing the Three Lions at international level.

Born in Stuttgart, Musiala spent just short of a decade in English academies with a year at Southampton followed by eight years at Chelsea. He signed for Bayern in 2019, however, and he’s not looked back, wowing audiences in an adventurous midfield role this term that’s seen him notch 13 goal involvements in 13 Bundesliga appearances.

In terms of Premier League entrants, there was little doubt about the inclusion of Man City star Ilkay Gundogan and Chelsea forward Kai Havertz. The pair have featured regularly for their clubs this campaign and, with 62 and 30 caps respectively, they’ll be two of the more experienced heads in Flick’s group.

The other two Premier League entrants are in defence. Southampton starlet Armel Bella-Kotchap’s stellar performances were unable to stop manager Ralph Hasenhuttl getting the sack this week but they have proven sufficient to earn Flick’s faith. In Qatar, he is expected to deputise for those with more pedigree including Antonio Rudiger, Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Sule.

Thilo Kehrer’s versatility could also come in handy for Germany in Qatar. The former Schalke and Paris Saint-Germain defender has now rocked up at West Ham and, with 22 caps for his country and the ability to play right-back or centre-back, his inclusion didn’t come as much of a surprise.

Other noteworthy members of the 26-strong group include Freiburg veteran Christian Gunter and Werder Bremen forward Niclas Fullkrug, who will join up with squad veterans like Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich.

Germany have organised a warm-up fixture against Oman next week, seven days prior to their Group E opener against Japan on November 23. Die Mannschaft last took to the field back in September, contesting a thrilling 3-3 draw with England at Wembley.
