“He’s obviously proven as well in F1 that he’s a very capable driver and a strong driver as well. I’m looking forward to being able to show what I have, but also there’s undoubtedly going to be things to learn along the way, and I think Lando is a very strong teammate to be able to learn from.”

He added: “I think it’ll be a good working relationship. Obviously, we’re both quite similar in age, we’ve got a few friends in common.

“I’m confident we’ll be able to work well together and hopefully bring the whole team more towards the front of the grid, because that’s the aim.” Piastri’s comments come after Norris admitted he was worried about being “hurt” by his new team-mate.

Norris claimed losing to the highly-rated F2 rookie would affect him after beating Daniel Ricciardo over the past two seasons. He told RacingNews365: “It would hurt me a lot, because I want to believe I’m the best or if not, one of the best.

“You work for so many years to try and be in that position, and you want to beat everyone, especially your teammates.

“So if that time comes when you start to get beaten, that would hurt you inside, because that’s the last thing you ever want to happen when you’re racing. You do everything possible in your nature to find ways to get on top of it and go quicker in and beat the teammate or whoever it is.”

Piastri snubbed Alpine after he was promoted by the French manufacturer during the summer break. But it emerged the 21-year-old had already signed a deal with McLaren which led to a battle at the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board (CRB).

The CRB confirmed the Australian’s deal within McLaren was the only legitimate one, confirming Piastri would join the team for two years from 2023.
