Police investigating whether death of child in Wollongong is linked to nearby car crash

NSW police are investigating whether the death of a child is linked to a car crash that occurred in Wollongong last night.
Emergency services were called to a home in the suburb of Balgownie around 2am after receiving reports a 12-year-old boy was significantly injured.
The boy was transferred to Wollongong Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The callout came less than half an hour after a vehicle crashed into a traffic light nearby in Towradgi.
Officers responded immediately to the crash but found the vehicle empty, after the passengers fled.
Crime scenes have been established at both sites and police are investigating whether the child’s death is linked to the crash.
Police are calling for anyone with information or dashcam relevant to the crash investigation, or how the child came to be injured, to contact Wollongong Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
